Zion Williamson revealed his desire to remain with the New Orleans Pelicans long-term. The star big man spoke with media and expressed his willingness to maintain his place in the squad.
“I do want to be here. That’s no secret. I feel like I’ve stood on that when I spoke. Currently, this does not really have anything to do with that. This is just me wanting to be a pillar in my community,” Zion Williamson said, via ESPN.
The No.1 pick of the 2019 NBA Draft missed the entire 2021/22 season, because of injuries (broken right foot). The Pelicans cleared him to return to play without restrictions on May 26 and he is now working to be ready for the coming season.
Zion Williamson is also eligible for a rookie max contract extension this offseason. This could be for five years, worth a total of $186M.
“It was a long year for me for rehab and mental battles. I’m fine now. I’m ready to get to work,” the young big man added.
For its part, New Orleans hopes a healthy Zion Williamson, along with Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum, will make the franchise a legit playoff contender next season.
The Pelicans suffered an early playoff exit this season, losing to the Phoenix Suns in six games in the opening round (4-2).
