Jordan Poole could be on his way to secure a huge contract extension in the coming summer. The Warriors’ guard is eligible to be signed this offseason.
According to Connor Letourneau of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Warriors want to sign a deal with Poole in the 2022 offseason to avoid restricted free agency. Poole could command a four-year deal, worth $80 million, per cap expert Keith Smith.
“The Warriors also will try to sign Poole to a multiyear extension this summer, which would allow them to avoid having to deal with him in restricted free agency in 2023. Keith Smith, a salary-cap expert for Spotrac, estimates that deal to be in the four-year, $80 million range.”
The Warriors will also need to re-sign starting center Kevon Looney this summer, who is on his last year of his deal, worth something less than $6 million. Looney will also command an extensive increase in salary, as he is having the best year of his career.
On the other hand, Poole definitely is an important part of the Warriors’ game plan this season. He averages a career-high 16.4 points, 3.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds, shooting 43 percent from the field.
He could be an “insurance” for Andrew Wiggins, if the Canadian forward becomes a free agent in the 2023/24 offseason. Golden State may not be capable of paying him the roughly $37 million that he could warrant, per Letourneau.
Wiggins was a first-time All-Star this season, putting impressive numbers as a two-way threat for Golden State. He’s the second-best scorer in the 42-17 Warriors, putting up 17.7 points with 48/41/66 shooting splits through 54 games.
Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green are due to make $123 million entering the 2023-24 season. Poole’s extension could be an important part of the Warriors’ plan going forward, as they’re expected to be hard-capped in the coming years.
