Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers want to keep the title-winning roster together next season and run it back. The Warriors are expected to have an interesting summer with several free agents.
“We don’t know what the market will be for our guys,” Myers said after Thursday’s championship celebration, via Anthony Slater of The Athletic (h/t Bleacher Report).
“We’ll make an effort to keep the team together. It’s a good balance of young, old and in the middle. There isn’t a guy we don’t like. So, we’ll try.”
Kevon Looney, Gary Payton II, Otto Porter and Andre Iguodala will be unrestricted free agents this offseason. Especially Kevon Looney and Gary Payton II who had expanded roles in the Warriors’ rotation this past season.
Moreover, the Warriors salary will go up with the contracts of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins running into the next year. Additionally, the Warriors will need to pay breakout star Jordan Poole this offseason or next season.
Myers still hopes to run it back in 2022-23 with as much as the current squad as possible. “We have a great roster,” Myers said. “I don’t anticipate a lot of changes.”
Even if some players leave this offseason, there is already a young core, which can step into bigger roles next season. Moses Moody has already receives big minutes in the playoffs, while Jonathan Kuminga had a role in several games in the season and playoffs.
In addition, bigman James Wiseman —the former No.2 overall pick— will return next season healthy after missing all year due to injury. Wiseman theoretically can be a great replacement for Looney if the veteran big receives a deal the Warriors cannot match.
