Prior to the crucial play-in game vs the Clippers, the Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed to a multiyear deal with head coach Chris Finch, the team announced on Monday.
Finch wrapped up his second season as the Timberwolves head coach after being hired in February 2021. His 62 total wins over the last two seasons rank fourth in team history, and his 50.4% winning percentage ranks second behind Flip Saunders’ mark of 52.1%.
Finch led Minnesota to a 46-36 record this season, which ranks as the seventh-best record in club history, including a 26-15 record at Target Center and a 32-20 record against the Western Conference.
“I am thankful to Glen, Becky and the entire ownership group for their ongoing support and commitment,” Finch said, via NBA.com. “It’s been a season that all of us, including our fans can be proud of and I’m grateful that my staff will continue to lead us forward.”
Finch will have the chance to lead the club to its second playoff appearance the last 17 years and its first since the 2017-2018 season. Finch will receive a three-year extension with an option for a fourth year, per Darren Wolfson.
The Timberwolves ended season as the best offensive team in the NBA putting up 115.9 points per game. They were sixth in offensive rating (113.3) and first in three-pointers made.
In the defensive end, the Wolves were first in forcing turnovers and points off turnovers, third in blocks (5.9) and third in steals (8.8). Minnesota hosts the Clippers at Target Center on Tuesday night for the start of the play-in tournament.
The Timberwolves and Clippers met each other four times during the 2021-22 campaign, with the Clippers taking the series 3-1. Securing a playoff spot is expected to be the biggest test for Chris Finch and his team to date.
