Thunder expected to continue tanking to ensure entry in Victor Wembanyama’s sweepstakes

While the strategy of a team tanking their way to success did not seem to be the perfect strategy in the NBA after the rules changes in the lottery, the OKC Thunder are expected to remain on that path for at least one more season.

According to Sports Illustrated, “rival teams already expect the Thunder will remain pot-committed” to ensure an entry to Victor Wembanyama’s sweepstakes. The EuroLeague young star is expected to be the no.1 selection in the 2023 Draft.

Wembanyama has shown incredible promise after a real successful season playing alongside and against professional players in Europe. The Thunder are not expected to make moves that will help the team to more wins.

The same goes for other teams like the Rockets, Magic and Pacers, who also expect to be in the lottery next year. However, getting the no.1 overall pick is not easy as it was in the past as finishing with the best odds ensures nothing.

Wembanyama is being billed as a generational prospect and the heavy favorite to go first overall in the 2023 NBA Draft. He appeared in 13 EuroLeague games as a teenager and averaged 6.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per contest.

He amped up those numbers in the LNB Pro A registering 9.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.8 blocks through 16 games. ASVEL are one game away from making the Pro A Finals being at 1-0 in the semifinal series vs. Dijon.
