The Phoenix Suns ended the season in devastating fashion as they were eliminated from the playoffs after a blowout loss to the Dallas Mavericks.
While the night did not go to plan for anyone on the Suns, it was particularly rough for Deandre Ayton. The four-year center stayed on the court for just 17 minutes and finished with five points and four rebounds.
In the postgame presser, Phoenix head coach Monty Williams addressed his decision to leave Ayton in the bench. Asked about Ayton’s lack of playing time, Williams said, “it’s internal.” When pressed to expound on that quote, he declined.
While there’s no clear indication for the reason behind William’s decision. Ayton has been on his last year of his rookie deal and he’s eligible for a max extension. The Suns could not come to an agreement with the promising big at the start of the season.
“His contract situation is between him and the front office,” Booker said. “I care about him as a brother. Just making sure his mental is right…whatever happens, happens.”
Ayton is set to hit restricted free agency this summer. The Suns were hesitant to give Ayton’s a max deal last summer. Ayton may want to go elsewhere and meet with other teams to see if one will give him a true max deal. The Suns can match any offer sheet.
Ayton did not speak to the media after Game 7 loss. The exit interview of the star center will have some interest regarding his side of the story and his future with the Phoenix Suns.
