Suns’ HC Monty Williams reportedly named NBA coaches’ favorite coach

Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams was named best coach of the year by the National Basketball Coaches Association, per Adrian Wojnarowski. This is the second consecutive award for the veteran head coach, who led the Suns to the best record in the NBA.

The league will announce the NBA’s coach of the year winner later in the playoffs. The NBCA award is based on the 30 NBA coaches votes. Williams led Phoenix to a franchise record 64 wins with the Suns being among the favorites to win the NBA title.

Willie Green of New Orleans, Memphis’ Taylor Jenkins, the Clippers’ Ty Lue, San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich and Miami’s Erik Spoelstra are some notable names receiving votes.

The Suns ranked in the top five in offensive and defensive efficiency this season, and went 33-9 in clutch-time games. They had set several records under Williams, who led the team to its third consecutive winning season.

Phoenix will play one of the Spurs, Pelicans, Clippers or Timberwolves in the first round of the playoffs. In any case, Phoenix is considered the heavy favorites as they’re hoping to reach the NBA Finals for the second time in a row.
