Memphis Grizzlies bigman Steven Adams has been among the best rebounders in the league this season getting a career-high 10.0 rebounds per game.
Adams has elevated the Memphis’ hustle stats with his ability to rebound the ball in a high-level. Adams has been dominant on the boards this season, but he said there is nothing special to his approach to rebounding.
“You could go into the Dennis Rodman stuff. He had it down to a science, talking about the rotations of the ball and stuff. He’s wild, mate,” Adams told reporters Sunday.
“I’m too stupid for that, mate. I don’t have enough brain cells for that one, brother. I just stand there.”
Dennis Rodman talked about his out-of-this world ability to rebound the ball during The Last Dance docuseries. The Hall of Famer went deep into the art of rebounding.
“I’d just sit there and react, react. I just practiced a lot about the angle of the ball and the trajectory of it. You got a Larry Bird, it’s gonna spin. You got a Magic, it’ll maybe spin. When Michael shoot over here, I position myself right there. So basically I just start learning how to put myself in a position to get the ball.”
Adams explanation was more simple, however he’s definitely doing something right. Adams has registered 334 offensive rebounds leading the league and already set a Grizzlies franchise record.
“He understands that It’s a science to him. He knows when he got a good chance, he’s always in the right position to tip in up, keeping the ball live,” De’Anthony Melton said after the Grizzlies’ win vs Bucks Saturday.
The Grizzlies are no.2 in the Western Conference, even without Ja Morant, who missed the last three games of his team with knee soreness.
