Steve Clifford takes over Hornets

Steve Clifford returns to the Charlotte Hornets after four years to become the new head coach and replace James Borrego.

Clifford was the head coach of the Hornets for five years (2013-2018) and led Charlotte to the playoffs twice (2014, 2016), going 196-214 overall.

After leaving Charlotte, he took over the Orlando Magic and spent three seasons there (2018-2021), helping the squad reach the playoffs in consecutive seasons (2018, 2019). Now, he returns to the Hornets, aiming to lead the franchise back to the postseason.

Charlotte had initially agreed to a four-year deal with Kenny Atkinson. However, the latter decided to remain with the new NBA champions, Golden State Warriors, and become a top assistant.

Before hiring Steve Clifford, Charlotte also strongly considered Mike D’Antoni, who interviewed with team owner Michael Jordan.
