Shavon Shields scored a game-high 18 points and led Olimpia Milan to a 62-66 victory over Virtus Bologna in Game 1 of the Serie A Finals. Luigi Datome had 13 points and Kyle Hines posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
After the close first half (28-27), the EuroLeague powerhouse orchestrated an 11-0 run to take a 32-45 lead in the third quarter. Led by Tornike Shengelia, Virtus came back within two (57-59) with three minutes remaining in the game.
However, Milan was able to remain ahead despite having a tough time scoring the ball in the final stretch of the game. Milos Teodocic was the best player on the court for Virtus, registering 16 points and six assists.
Tornike Shengelia followed him with 11 points as Virtus is hoping to repeat in the Finals. Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is on June 10 in Bologna.
Milan will need three more wins to be crowned champions after failing to do so last season against the same opponent.
