Russell Westbrook hasn’t had the best of the season so far with the Los Angeles Lakers. After Westbrook’s wife, Nina Westbrook, took to Twitter to call out fans for harassing her and her family, Westbrook called on to speak on the matter.
Nina Westbrook released a series of tweets to detail the criticism and even “death wishes” her family has received.
“When I’m being harassed on a daily basis over basketball games, and I’m having obscenity’s and death wishes for me and my family sent my way because you’re expressing your “truth”, it’s hard for me to get on board with that,” Nina Westbrook tweeted.
Russ admitted the situation weights more on him and his family as the season with the Lakers progress. It reached a point where his family doesn’t attend home games.
“She’s reached a point and my family has reached a point where it’s really weighing on them and it’s very unfortunate just for me personally because this is just a game. This is not end all be all…,” Westbrook told reporters after Lakers’ loss to the Spurs Monday.
“It affects them even going to games,” he added later. “Like, I don’t even want to bring my kids to the game because I don’t want them to hear people calling their dad nicknames and other names for no reason because he’s playing the game that he loves.
L.A. came into the 2021-22 campaign as one of the odds-on-favorites to win it all. However, they dropped eight games under the .500 mark after Monday’s loss.
The veteran superstar became the target of many Lakers’ fans as the sole reason the team is struggling right now. However, the franchise knew what they traded for when they overhauled their roster to acquire Westbrook.
The fit of a ball-dominant player alongside LeBron was questionable. The lack of shooting in the roster just made things worse. As a result, the Lakers experienced some uninspiring losses as a team.
As the highest-paid player in the roster, Westbrook became quickly the target for many fans as the Lakers have dropped eight of their last 10 games.
“I 100% stand behind my wife and how she’s feeling,” the 2017 MVP said. “When it comes to basketball, I don’t mind the criticism of missing and making shots. But the moment it becomes where my name is getting shamed, it becomes an issue.”
