The Los Angeles Lakers have turned the page after a disappointing season, replacing Frank Vogel with Darvin Ham in the bench. General Manager Rob Pelinka said the franchise is interested in buying a second-round pick in the upcoming draft.
The Los Angeles Lakers will not have any picks in the 2022 NBA Draft. They traded away their first-round pick to the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2019 Anthony Davis deal. The second-round pick ended up with the Wizards as part of that deal.
With the draft, a few weeks away, the Lakers are working several prospects hoping to acquire a place in the second round as Pelinka revealed recently. The Lakers had some success with second round picks in the past.
“So yeah, one of the intentional sort of philosophical, architectural visions for us is to get younger and Coach Ham has a passion for developing players,” Pelinka said recently, per USA Today Sports
“So it would be a goal for us to try to somehow get into the second round to get a young player that we can develop. We’ve had great success if you look at our draft history and the guys we’ve drafted and developed.
We think we can do it again in 2022 if we can pull off a trade to get a pick.”
The Lakers added several pieces in the second round of the draft including Talen Horton-Tucker, who had been the 46th selection in the 2019 draft and Jordan Clarkson, who was the 46th pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.
Ivica Zubac and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk are other notable players the Lakers selected in the second round draft in the last six years. Zubac has become the starting center of the Clippers, while Mykhailiuk had small-time roles in various NBA teams as a shooting specialist.
