Cleveland Cavaliers will be in a search of a back-up point guard this offseason after the breakout year of Darius Garland. According to Chris Fedor of cleveland.com, Ricky Rubio appears to be one of the “likely” options this summer.

Rubio saw action in 34 games and made eight starts. He averaged 13.1 points, 6.6 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. The fifth overall pick of the 2009 NBA Draft offered valuable veteran leadership to a young cavs team.

Rubio began the 2021-22 season with the Cavaliers before seeing his season come to an end in December after tearing his left ACL. Since he’s on an expiring contract, he was included as part of the trade that helped acquire Caris LeVert from the Indiana Pacers.

Fedor notes that Delon Wright or Tyus Jones, among others could also be candidates as unrestricted free agents. The Cavaliers are coming off a surprising season as they finished no.7 in the Eastern Conference.

They were even a Top-5 Eastern Conference team at some point before injuries derailed their season and end up with the 8th seed. The lost to Brooklyn and Atlanta in the play-in tournament to get eliminated by the postseason.

While the Cavaliers are coming off their first winning season since the 2017-18 campaign, the team doesn’t appear to be resting on that accomplishment. They will look to build on a successful season going forward.
