Los Angeles Lakers are leaving open all options regarding the future of Russell Westbrook with the franchise. Now that the Lakers have finally named Darvin Ham as the newest head coach, there can be more focus put on figuring out the roster.
According to Dan Woike from the Los Angeles Times, what the LA franchise will do with Westbrook seems to be the no.1 topic for the team. Woike said a finding a deal for Westbrook can be a complicated matter for the franchise.
Speaking with several NBA executives, Woike revealed the Purple and Gold do not really know what to do with the last year of Westbrook’s contract. Most execs believe any Westbrook deal would require the Lakers sacrificing at least one future first, per Woike (h/t Sports Illustrated).
“But the only thing solid to report is that the Lakers haven’t ruled anything out when it comes to Westbrook’s future. They’ve definitely discussed him with potential coaches in their interview process. But that’s just one option. A trade is certainly still on the table, too,” Woike wrote
However, the Lakers’ beat reporter added the Lakers are reviewing all the possible options regarding the future of the 2016 MVP. Considering the fact that the fit with Westbrook is at least questionable alongside Anthony Davis and LeBron James, a trade is still on the table.
If they end up staying with Westbrook, fans will be expecting to see real improvement. The LA franchise finished the past season with a 33-49 record and missed the postseason for the first time in three seasons.
