Denver Nuggets and head coach Michael Malone has agreed to a multiyear extension, that will keep the veteran coach in Denver for the next few seasons, Adrian Wojnarowski reports.
Across seven seasons, Malone, who had the 2022-2023 season remaining on his current deal, led the Denver Nuggets to multiple playoff appearances including a Western Conference Finals berth.
Malone only trailing Doug Moe and George in the Nuggets’ winningest head coaches list. He has 309 wins under his belt with the franchise. The Nuggets are 43-30 this season—sixth in the Western Conference—with Nikola Jokic being among the favorites to win the MVP.
The Nuggets are having successful season with Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. having not played a single game together this season. Murray is recovering from an ACL tear, while Michael Porter Jr. has been dealing with a back injury.
Malone started his head coaching career in Sacramento having a 348-304 through nine seasons in the NBA. The Nuggets bounced back from a bad strings of results with a 115-127 beating vs the Clippers.
After a brutal 124-104 home loss at the hands of the red-hot Boston Celtics, Malone called out his team’s starters for the effort.
”To me, it appeared we just kind of gave in and quit. And I didn’t want to reward that behavior,” Malone said, via NBA.com. ”I thought the bench unit was at least going out there and competing and fighting.”
His team responded with well-rounded performance against the Los Angeles Clippers. Despite struggles, especially from a perspective of an injury-riddled season, the Nuggets remained poised for most of the season.
All in all, Denver ranks third in field goal percentage, second in effective field goal percentage and second in assist percentage and first in assist ratio in the NBA.
