NBA Top Stories: Warriors’ stingy defense returns in much needed win vs Clippers

Golden State Warriors have been on a tough stretch of games the last few weeks. While offense was not always there for the Warriors this season, defense was always their “escape route”.

That’s the biggest reason they are 44-22 and third in the Western Conference. Steve Kerr’s squad has been the second-best team in opponent’s points per game, allowing just 104.9.

They are also second in Def Rtg (105.7) during the 2021-22 regular season, only behind the Boston Celtics, who are playing some of their best basketball in a long time during the last few weeks.

The Warriors needed a refresher as they did their best to down the Clippers 97-112. This was the first win in the last six games for the “Dubs”, who kept their opponents under the 100-point mark for the first time since Feb.25 and for just the third time during the last month.

They had 21 such games until Feb.8 having an 19-2 record in those contests. The Warriors found some of that energy after Will Ferrell worked out with the team prior to Tuesday’s contest.

Ferrell went through shooting, passing and dribbling while sporting a vintage-style headband and dressed in his Jackie Moon jersey from the 2008 hoops film “Semi-Pro.”

“He’s a huge Klay Thompson fan and he knows how much Klay loves dressing up as Jackie Moon, so it was just kind of a natural fit and it felt like a good time to do it just to make everybody laugh in a tough stretch of the season,” Steve Kerr said in the post-game presser.

Klay Thompson led his team to the win with 20 points, while Jonathan Kuminga had 21 coming off the bench. Jordan Poole also scored 20 points, while Andrew Wiggins added 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Despite making a habit of losing leads lately, the Warriors held on to the win. Still, the Clippers outscored them 36-26 in the fourth quarter.

Curry added 15 points, five assists and five rebounds, making just one of his six three-point attempts in a game that he became the franchise’s steals leader, passing Chris Mullin.

The Warriors will have to keep rolling to remain close to the top of the West. As they’re waiting Draymond Green to get back from a back injury, they will face the Nuggets in Denver on Wednesday and the Bucks at Chase Center on Friday.
