NBA Top Stories: Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic set for max contract extension

Nikola Jokic is set for a max contract extension with the Denver Nuggets, according to his agent, Misko Raznatovic.

As Raznatovic said in an interview with Basketnews.com, the reigning NBA MVP will sign the max contract in the summer.

“According to our expectations, it should be signed this summer. The extension of the maximum amount, what he obviously deserved,” Raznatovic said.

After winning the NBA MVP award last season, the Serbian big man became eligible for a max contract extension. He can sign this extension either in 2022 or 2023.

Nikola Jokic is under contract with the Nuggets until 2023. Back in 2018, he agreed to a five-year, $148M deal.

This time, the max contract will be the largest one in NBA history, Bobby Marks of ESPN reports. Per Marks, Nikola Jokic will sign a five-year contract, worth more than $241M.

The Nikola Jokic super max extension in 2022 is projected to be the largest contract in NBA history. *2023-24: $42.6M 2024-25: $44.9M 2025-26: $48.2M 2026-27: $51.5M 2027-28: $54.8M Total of $241M *Based on a salary cap of $121.5M — Bobby Marks (@BobbyMarks42) June 8, 2021

The superstar of the Nuggets is nearly averaging a triple-double this season, with 25.5 points, 13.8 rebounds and eight assists. He has led Denver to the sixth place in the West (36-26), which directly clinches a spot in the playoffs.

“He dominates the game without jumping out the gym, without moving the fastest. And he’s just picking defenses apart —he’s being double-teamed every possession— and still averaging a triple-double without his two main scorers out there on the court,” star teammate Jamal Murray said, via Complex Sports.

Nikola Jokic went for 22 points, 16 boards and four assists in the home loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday (119-107). The Nuggets remain 2.5 games ahead of seventh-placed Minnesota Timberwolves (34-29).
