Evan Mobley has been an important part of the Cleveland Cavaliers reinvigorate team, which is among the best in the Eastern Conference. With that in mind, he seems to be the favorite to win the Rookie of the Year award this season.
The rookie big has been spectacular so far, and he has exceeded expectations after Cleveland selected him as the third overall pick of the 2021 NBA Draft. The promising center has been averaging 14.7 points, being the third-best scorer in a playoff team.
Mobley is a two-way presence for the Cavaliers, helping them in both ends of the floor. He and Jarrett Allen form a formidable duo in the paint, which allows Cleveland to be the best team in OPPG. They allowed their opponents to score just 103.0 points per game.
Closing down the lanes and being a switchable defender is already a big part of Mobley’s game. The rookie leads the team in blocks averaging 1.6 per contest, while he’s still a big part of the team’s rebounding efforts (8.1 RPG) and creating process in Cleveland’s offensive sets.
The rookie big dishes 2.6 assists per game, while he’s having an 1.31 AST/TO ratio, which is an excellent start for a first-year big. Despite we’re supposedly leaving in the era of the dominant guards and forwards, but the dominant bigs has slowly returned to the game.
Currently, three bigs are leading the race for the MVP award with Joel Embiid, Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo being the favorites. Mobley certainly could reach to those heights someday.
For now, the Cavs’rookie has continued learning the in and outs of the game. After a disappointing defeat at the hands of the Charlotte Hornets Wednesday, Mobley will have to help his team find its offensive composure again.
The Cavaliers lost to Charlotte 119-98 to drop to 36-26, which ranks them fifth in the competitive Eastern Conference. The rookie had nine points, and he was minus-24 in his 30 minutes of play.
Mobley and the Cleveland Cavaliers will try to bounce back Friday against Joel Embiid and James Harden. This will be a great test for the rookie center, who was compared to the Sixers‘ superstar big when he was at USC.
