The NBA will reportedly increase its salary cap to $123.6 million for the 2022-23 season, which is an increase of $11.6 million from last season’s $112 million, according to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps.
With the league increasing its cap space, the NBA’s luxury tax line for next season will be close to $150.2 million with a hard cap at nearly 156.9 million. The league’s final salary-cap figure will not be set yet.
The NBA's salary cap for the 2022-23 season is projected to come in at roughly $123.6 million, sources told ESPN. That is an $11.6 million increase from last year's salary cap figure of $112 million. — Tim Bontemps (@TimBontemps) June 29, 2022
Per Keith Smith of Spotrac, the projected luxury tax will increase to $150.267 million and the hard cap will increase to $156.98 million. The NBA’s rise in salary cap will be nearly equal to the amount the cap has risen from 2017-18 to 2021-22.
The teams played with no or limited capacity crowds the last two seasons due to the coronavirus pandemic. The projected salary cap before was estimated around at $122 million with a $149 million luxury-tax threshold.
Kevin Pelton of ESPN made an interesting statement since Tim Bontemps broke the news claiming that the Warriors’ losing three potential closeout games help the league to an increased total income.
The league’s final salary-cap figure will not be set until the audit of the NBA’s finances are complete and the basketball-related income for last season is totaled, per Bontemps. Once the decision is finalized, it will be sent to each team ahead of the 2022-23 season start.
