The Toronto Raptors are expected to discuss a contract extension with star guard Fred VanVleet this offseason.
This is what HoopsHype reports, noting that Toronto aims to keep VanVleet long-term. The 28-year-old guard is entering the final year of his current deal, as the 2023/24 season is a player option.
If he decides to re-sign this summer, then his new contract will be for three years, worth $89M. On the other hand, if he declines his option in 2023, the new deal would be for four years, worth $131M.
At the same time, the Raptors have no desire whatsoever to trade OG Anunoby, who has already been linked to a few teams.
“The Toronto Raptors are not looking to trade OG Anunoby, league sources told HoopsHype. For Toronto to consider trading Anunoby, it would have to be a substantial trade package for the soon-to-be 25-year-old forward along the lines of a noteworthy upgrade at center or a top-10 draft pick,” HoopsHype adds.
Fred VanVleet and OG Anunoby were among the best players of the Raptors this season, as Toronto finished fifth in the regular season (48-34), but got eliminated in the opening round by the Philadelphia 76ers.
Lakers not expected to get clarity from LeBron James on contract extension
Los Angeles Lakers have a big summer ahead of them with LeBron James contract extension being the biggest story line of the offseason for them. As of now, the Lakers are not expected to see James clarifying his intentions until draft and free agency, per Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report.
James is eligible to sign a max deal this summer, and he has until August 4 to make a decision. If he does not sign an early extension, he will enter the final year of his current deal and he will be an unrestricted free agent next summer.
The Lakers aren’t necessarily in a bad place if LeBron leaves. Anthony Davis is locked in through 2024 and Los Angeles remains a premier market that can attract top talent. In any case, the LA franchise can achieve plenty with LeBron until next summer.
In case the Lakers return to contention next season, then they will have an extra card to play if James decides to hit free agency. However, It’d be easier for the Lakers to trade for a good player in a contract year or deal future draft picks knowing LeBron is staying.
