Luka Doncic had a hard time to score during Game 1 loss in the Western Conference Finals vs the Golden State Warriors. The Slovenian finished Wednesday’s contest with 20 points, but he shot 6-of-18 from the field and 3-of-10 from three-point range.
He only scored two points in the second half where the Warriors dominated and created separation to end up with a blowout victory in Chase Center. The Mavs’ superstar reflected on his performance, saying that he got to do better.
“I gotta be better, that’s not me,” Doncic told reporters. “I gotta be better for the whole group. As a leader, I got to be better so that’s on me.”
Doncic totaled seven turnovers as he faced several defensive coverages throughout the game. Dallas shot just 36.0 percent from the field and 11-for-48 (22.9 percent) from beyond the arc. Golden State also won the rebounding battle 51-35.
”They did a really good job. Wiggins picking him up full court,” Mavs coach Jason Kidd said. ”They went box-and-one, they went zone. We understood coming into the series that we were going to see that. We’ll go back and look at the video and see what we can do better.”
Some of the Mavs’ struggles can be attributed to a tough seven-game series vs the top-seeded Phoenix Suns. However, the Warriors shut down the Mavericks for most of the Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals.
That was the third loss for Dallas in the first game in the third playoff series during the 2022 NBA playoffs. The Warriors had a few extra days of rest since closing out their series against the Memphis Grizzlies, and they took advantage as the game progressed.
The Mavericks will have the chance to bounce back Friday in Game 2 of the series.
