LeBron James talked about the situation regarding the discussion around negotiation for a contract extension with the Lakers. James is eligible to sign a two-year, max contract with the LA franchise starting August 4.
“The conversation hasn’t been talked about,” James told reporters, via Hoopswire. “Technically, it’s because (with) the collective bargaining agreement (it) cannot even be discussed until later on in the year.”
The Lakers just finished a disappointing regular season run losing six of their last seven games- all of them crucial for play-in qualification. LeBron missed the last five games of his team with an ankle sprain.
He had a remarkable season individually averaging 30.1 points and being among the league leaders in scoring. The Lakers struggled mightily all season, finishing with a disappointing 33-49, which ranked them as the 11th best record in the West.
The Purple and Gold organization announced they parted ways with head coach Frank Vogel after three seasons. James might take a “wait and see” approach entering next season, especially if the Lakers cannot build a contending team.
“I know what’s out there. But we can’t even — myself and Rich — can’t even begin to talk with Rob, or the front office at all, because of the collective bargaining agreement. So (when) we get to that point, we’ll see,” LeBron noted.
James not confirming he’s willing to remain with the Lakers could be an alarming issue for the team. The idea of pairing James with a ball-dominant guard was considered not great from the start.
However, the injuries made things worse for an already problematic fit. Anthony Davis has missed many games, while the same goes for LeBron and some crucial potential rotational pieces like Kendrick Nunn.
The Lakers will soon start the search for a new head coach, who will replace Vogel. Mark Jackson, Doc Rivers and Quin Snyder are among the names got considered so far, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic.
In any case, the Lakers have a lot of ground to cover this season including finding a new place for Russell Westbrook and adding a fitting supporting cast around James and Davis.
