Lakers waive Trevor Ariza

Los Angeles Lakers have decided to waive veteran forward Trevor Ariza, the team announced on Thursday.

The 17-time NBA champions parted ways with Ariza in order to create an open spot and cap flexibility in the roster.

They plan to sign Wenyen Gabriel or another young player to a partially non-guaranteed contract that extends beyond this season. That way, they can use that deal in offseason trades.

Trevor Ariza was expected to have a significant role in the Lakers’ tactics. However, an ankle surgery sidelined him for two months and ruled him out for the first 30 games of the season.

The veteran forward made his season debut on December 19, but never found his place in the rotation. As a result, he played just 24 games (11 starts).

This is the first roster change for the Lakers, following their elimination from the play-in tournament on Tuesday.

The 17-time NBA champions are expected to keep GM Rob Pelinka, despite the disappointing season. However, several players and head coach Frank Vogel are expected to part ways with the franchise.
