The Los Angeles Lakers dismissed three assistant coaches after naming Darvin Ham as their new head coach. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin and Adrian Wojnarowski reported assistant coaches David Fizdale, Mike Penberthy and John Lucas III won’t return for 2022-23.
The Lakers will hope to bounce back from 33-49 year under Frank Vogel, who was fired at the end of the 2021-22 regular season. Wojnarowski added that Ham has reached out to “several possible candidates around the league”.
Fizdale joined Los Angeles ahead of the 2021-22 season after having most recently coached the New York Knicks across two seasons. Penberthy returned in 2019 as an assistant following the hiring of Frank Vogel.
Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes reported assistant coach Phil Handy will, however, be back for a fourth year with the Lakers. Quinton Crawford will also return next season, per McMenamin and Wojnarowski.
The reports came a few days after Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium revealed that four-time All-Star Rasheed Wallace will agree to a deal with the Lakers. Rasheed Wallace was a teammate of Ham in Detroit.
