Darvin Ham has officially been named the Los Angeles Lakers head coach, the team announced Friday. The news were first reported one week ago about the veteran coach.

The former Bucks’ assistant sign a multi-year contract as head coach, it was announced today by Vice President, Basketball Operations and General Manager Rob Pelinka.

Ham, 48, will be the 28th head coach in franchise history. He enjoyed an eight-year NBA career with Detroit, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Washington, Indiana and Denver. He was part of the Pistons team that won the 2004 NBA title.

Ham was part of the coaching staff of the Lakers back in 2011 spending two seasons in LA before going to Atlanta alongside Mike Budenholzer in 2013. He then followed the veteran coach to Milwaukee working for nine years alongside him.

“When someone begins his NBA coaching career at the G League level and goes all the way through playing an integral role on the front bench of an NBA Championship team, it really speaks to a certain strength of character,” said Pelinka.

Our players and fans will immediately identify with Darvin’s no-nonsense and hard-working approach, which we feel will bring toughness and a competitive edge to all we do.”
