New York Knicks were the most active team in the 2022 NBA Draft being involved in several trades throughout the night. When the dust settled, they had in effect traded off Kemba Walker, the No. 11 pick and four second-round picks for three future first-rounders and cap space.
Knicks’ president Leon Rose released a statement as several fans and peers around the league appeared livid and confused by the franchise strategy to give up all those assets for just three first-rounders.
As a result, the team via Rose’s statement said the draft-night trades created “increased financial flexibility and additional draft capital moving forward.” The statement also noted that the trades allow the team “to be active in free agency, as well as in the trade market.”
It’s no secret the NY franchise want to sign Jalen Brunson this offseason. The Dallas Mavericks breakout star will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason and the Knicks are the no.1 candidate to pursue him.
The Knicks are now $18 million under the salary cap, and are putting themselves in position to make a major run for the Mavs’ guard. On the other side, Dallas will certainly be willing to pay Brunson and keep him in Texas.
Leon Rose hasn’t been active in the media as the team’s executive, and he only addressed the beat writers in a press conference once the 2021-22 season ended. The Knicks hope to return to the postseason after a disappointing performance last year.
If New York cannot land Brunson or another big name this offseason, then giving up all these assets including a lottery talent was for nothing.
