Knicks expected to be punished for tampering on Jalen Brunson’s deal

The New York Knicks are likely to be fined for tampering during their recruitment of Jalen Brunson. According to The Athletic, people around the league “expect the Knicks to get dinged for tampering” after signing the 25-year-old Brunson.

Katz added that Brunson’s former team, the Dallas Mavericks, was “frustrated” with the NY franchise in part because reports of a finished contract between Brunson and the Knicks came out before the two sides were even allowed to speak to each other.

Multiple reports surfaced days before the June 30 start time for NBA free agency indicating Brunson intended to sign with the Knicks. The NBA withheld the Bulls and Heat their next available second-round pick for their signings last year of Lonzo Ball and Kyle Lowry.

After investigation, both teams found engaged in early contact talks with the players. However, Brunson’s report for the four-year deal worth $104 million was not the only one reported right after the 2022 free agency open.

New York cleared out about $33 million in all by trading Kemba Walker, Alec Burks and Nerlens Noel to the Pistons. The Knicks went all-in to land Brunson after watching him average a career-high 16.3 points per game during the regular season.

He amped up those numbers in the postseason with an average of 21.6 points per game in the playoffs. Brunson is expected to become the starting point guard of the Knicks as the made everything in its powers to sign him this offseason.
