Golden State Warriors bigman Kevon Looney signed a new three-year deal worth $25.5M with the franchise, Adrian Wojnarowski reports. Looney will extend his stay for nine seasons in the Bay if he remains with the Warriors for three more seasons.
Looney was a huge factor for his team during the playoffs setting career-highs and adding a presence in the paint. He averaged 6.0 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists per contest through 80 games the past season.
He appeared in 22 games in the postseason and registered five starts averaging 5.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. He had his best series against Dallas in the WCF averaging a double-double with 10.6 points and 10.6 rebounds in five contests.
The Warriors did not have the luxury to lose Looney after unrestricted free agents Gary Payton II signed with Portland and Otto Porter Jr. signed with the Toronto Raptors, per Chris Haynes. Looney will continue to be the first option in the center position.
Additionally, the third year is only partially guaranteed for $3MM, reports Anthony Slater of The Athletic. James Wiseman is expected to be Looney’s backup as the third-year player will enter the 2022-23 season healthy.
