Kevin Durant has reportedly requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets after a long week of speculation. Shams Charania broke the news on Thursday, a few hours before the opening of the 2022 free agency.
Durant’s request follows the dramatic negotiation between Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets which ended by with the star point guard picking up his option for the last season of his deal with the team.
The superstar forward signed a contract extension worth $194 million at the beginning of the past season and committed his long-term future with the Nets. Obviously, the situation changed after negotiations with Irving fell off the cliff.
Irving reportedly was using Durant as his primary source of leverage while he tried to have his foremost desires satisfied. During the 2021-22 season, Durant averaged 29.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game.
The Nets failed to make a run for the NBA title after a regular season that was full of ups and downs due to injuries and Irving missing a good number of games due to his vaccination status.
Brooklyn was swept in the first round by the Boston Celtics and never matched the expectation of winning an NBA title with Durant and Kyrie.
