Jayson Tatum is focused on the crucial Gm 5 of the series between the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat on Wednesday. However, the Cs superstar was asked to share his thoughts on the All-NBA Teams selection this season.
Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum came to the defense of the Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid. The Sixers center was the scoring champion and runner-up for the 2021-22 MVP award, but he was selected to the All-NBA Second Team.
Tatum was part of the All-NBA First Team after leading the Celtics to one of the best records in the Eastern Conference. However, he stated that the current system of a traditional lineup of two guards, two forwards and two center is flawed.
“There’s just should be some rules in place. Maybe you should have to play a certain number of games or maybe you’re a playoff team,” Tatum said.
“I do think it should position-less. Joel Embiid was second in the MVP voting and made second team. It doesn’t make sense,” he said in defense of the Sixers’ superstar center.
Tatum was hurt financially from this system as he did not earn an MVP honor last season and as a result, he lost a $30M bonus. Tatum said that money wasn’t the primary reason for being disgruntled with the system.
“It wasn’t really incentivized for me with the money, It was more just I felt disrespected and the criteria is just so wide open,” Tatum noted.
In an era where a lot more positionless basketball is being played, the simple breakdown of two guards, two forwards and one center on each All-NBA team seems outdated and not in sync with the current demands in the game basketball.
