Gregg Popovich calls question about retirement “inappropriate” after Spurs’ loss

The Spurs’ season came to an end on Wednesday night after a 113–103 loss to the Pelicans in the play-in tournament.

Any scenario around Spurs’ Gregg Popovich future will have to wait for a later day, as the legendary head coach labeled a question about him coming back next season as “inappropriate.”

The Spurs made the playoffs for 22 straight years under the 73-year-old Popovich, whose 1,336 regular-season wins are first all time. He led the Spurs to 19 50-win or more seasons during that span winning five NBA titles in the process.

Popovich’s resume is unmatchable, even this season, he led a young Spurs team to the play-in tournament for the second time in the last three seasons.  At any rate, Popovich has done more than enough to choose his future path as the Spurs’ season comes to an end.

When it all said and done, Popovich will be a Hall of Famer and he’ll join his ex-star players (Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, David Robinson) who have already landed. In any case, Popovich has not given any indication he will stop coaching, at least for the next season.

The Spurs trailed for most of the game against the Pelicans, who saw veteran guard McCollum taking over in the first half, scoring 27 of his 32 points. The Spurs fell behind early against New Orleans on Wednesday, trailing by 11 at halftime and by 17 through three quarters.

The Pelicans will face the Clippers in Los Angeles to conclude the play-in tournament, with the winner advancing to the first round of the playoffs. The winner will play the top-seeded Suns.
