Luka Doncic is having a great season, turning things around after a slow start. The Slovenian wonderkid could not prevent the Mavericks’ loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, but, he helped his team have a positive record during a five-game road trip, which ends up in Charlotte Sunday.
The Dallas Mavericks were able to beat Brooklyn in a game that Doncic met his mentor, Goran Dragic. Both players have shared the floor as part of the Slovenian NT. Doncic almost recorded a triple-double against the veteran guard with 37 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in another great performance for the Mavs’ superstar.
Following the match, his fellow countryman and good friend showered Doncic in praise, claiming that he could go for 60 every night if he was focused only in scoring.
“If he’s making that stepback shot, he’s basically unguardable,” Dragic told reporters … “He can go for 60 easy, but you can see that he gets [everybody] involved, so you have to defend him.
But, then you have to shrink the floor. But, then he finds open guys, and you have a constant rotation, trying to scramble [like] this, and it’s tough.”
Doncic followed his masterful performance against Brooklyn with a bad shooting night against the Philadelphia 76ers zone. He shot 2-of-10 from deep and 5-of-20 from the field to finish the Dallas’ 101-111 loss with 17 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. The Sixers disrupt the Mavs’ squad with a zone defense and they did not let Doncic find his rhythm.
With his scoring rhythm off, Doncic looked to pass more often and recorded his 2,000th assist of his career in the fourth quarter. In any case, the Mavs will have to regroup, they have only lost four games since Feb 3.
Doncic could bounce back Sunday against the Charlotte Hornets, who are considered a mediocre defensive team. If they win in Charlotte, Dallas will finish a five-game road trip with a 4-1 record.
