Donovan Mitchell was clearly disappointed by the Utah Jazz early first-round exit in the 2022 NBA playoffs. In the aftermath of the Game 6 defeat to Dallas, the superstar guard expressed reaffirmed his will to remain in Utah.
However, Mitchell also referred to “things that could change” for the franchise this offseason in hope of becoming a legit contender. The Jazz superstar did not elaborate on his comment.
“I’m a competitor, and I feel like if you give us another crack at it, we can go get it,” Mitchell said, courtesy of ESPN’s Tim Bontemps.
“But in the same token, there’s things that could change. I’m not ready to discuss that, to be honest with you right now. I’m not. Mentally, I’m just not in that headspace, to be completely honest with you.”
Utah struggled to take a clear-cut lead against the Doncic-less Dallas Mavericks in the first three games of the series. Not only that, but they were down one game before the Mavs’ superstar returned in Game 4.
In Game 5 and 6 the presence of the Slovenian superstar tip the scale in favor of the Mavericks, who added two close-fought wins to their tally to advance to the next round. Jazz will definitely need to change something during the summer.
Utah, though, remains committed to building its roster around Mitchell, according to The Athletic’s Tony Jones. The same goes for Gobert, who owns the second max contract in Utah’s roster.
Obviously, Utah thinks that the franchise can improve the supporting cast around its two superstars and create a Western Conference powerhouse that can compete against Phoenix, Warriors or Dallas.
With the Jazz being among the disappointing stories of the offseason, the last few years, the front office will likely re-tool the team’s personnel in hopes of a deep playoff run.
