Darius Garland is expected to sign a five-year max deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The All-Star guard is eligible to sign his extension this summer, per Cavs insider Evan Damarell.
That could complicate the extensions of Collin Sexton and Caris LeVert with Cleveland having committed $20 million to Jarrett Allen and $28.9 million committed to Kevin Love.
Sexton, who is out for the season, will be a restricted free agent this summer, while LeVert will also enter the free agent market this summer.
Garland is in the middle of a career year for the Cavaliers. This season, the former No. 5 overall pick is averaging 21.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 8.7 assists per game.
He’s shooting 46.3 percent from the field and 37.4 percent from beyond the arc. His effort brought the Cavaliers to a playoff consideration, with Cleveland being currently the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference with a 42-35 record.
That could make it difficult for the team to keep both Sexton and LeVert for the long haul, but it’s a positive sign that Garland is clearly part of the team’s future. The Cavs could build a solid young core around Garland, Allen and rookie Evan Mobley.
Sexton is not expected to make an appearance this season after suffering a torn meniscus injury in his left knee early in the season. After coming to Cleveland in a trade deal with the Pacers around the trade deadline, LeVert faced several injuries that threw him off during the last two months.
According to Dammarell, the Cavs suggested Sexton’s recovery is going well, and he will be back the same scoring guard he was prior to injury.
In the 2020-21 campaign, Sexton took a major step forward, as he averaged 24.3 points per game while shooting 47.5 percent from the field and 37.1 percent from beyond the arc.
