Utah Jazz CEO of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge claimed the team wanted to continue with Quin Snyder as the head coach. The Jazz are already searching for a new head coach, but they wanted to avoid being in this position starting the offseason.
“We have spent the last few weeks talking Quin and I, a lot about a lot of different things” Ainge told reporters Monday. “And I think it’s pretty clear, we desperately wanted him to stay.”
After eight seasons with the franchise, Snyder opt to leave Utah to spend more time with his family. He coached the team to six straight playoff appearances and a 372-264 record in the regular season.
He failed however to make it out of the second round of the playoffs. The Jazz were 21-30 in postseason games under him. In any case, he’s one of only two coaches to have a winning record with Utah, with Jerry Sloan being the other.
Ainge has led two head coaching searches as an NBA executive. During his 18-year run with the Boston Celtics, he hired Doc Rivers and Brad Stevens. In addition to finding a new head coach, the Jazz face questions regarding their roster.
“There’s a lot of names I know and I’m familiar with in the coaching world,” Ainge said. “This will be much different than the two previous and probably more thorough.”
The Jazz begun the search for a new head coach with the initial names for the vacancy being Terry Stotts and former Jazz’s assistant Johnnie Bryant mong others, per Shams Charania of The Athletic.
