Dallas Mavericks are expected to build on their Western Conference Finals run. Dallas will target Bulls’ star Zach LaVine, who will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and they’re expected to spend over the cap.

NBA reporter Marc Stein added to the conversation the Mavericks upcoming offseason, including what he’s heard about their stance on LaVine. The Mavericks are expected to try to make a “sign-and-trade” deal for the explosive guard.

“Sources nonetheless maintain that one option already being weighed by team brass is the prospect of joining the sign-and-trade bidding for the Chicago Bulls’ Zach LaVine,” Stein wrote. (h/t Sports Illustrated)

LaVine has been an important part of Chicago’s resurgence in the Eastern Conference as they returned to the playoffs for the first time in six seasons. LaVine averaged 24.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.

After making $19.5 million per year on his current contract, LaVine will be looking for a max contract this summer. Dallas will have to accommodate a trade for LaVine as they will be over the cap with Luca Doncic’s max deal kicking in this summer.

Stein stated that the path to LaVine as a target is unclear, as the Bulls are not considered willing to part ways with him after making great strides as a franchise the past season. More importantly, the Mavs seem to lack the assets to make any deal for a coveted star.
