Dallas Mavericks are one ”player away” from contention, per NBA executive

The Dallas Mavericks could not get past the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Western Conference Finals. They will turn their attention to improving the roster after making the deepest playoff run in more than 10 years.

Speaking to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, one NBA executive aid the Mavs are only “one player away” from being a real title contender. The Mavericks will have to make several important decisions this summer as they are hard-capped even without potentially signing Brunson.

Dallas wasted the flexibility of having Luka Doncic on a rookie contract, failing to make a splash in free agency over the past few years. Hi max extension will kick in this summer and the Mavs won’t have room for a second star.

According to MacMahon, the same executive told him Dallas will need to figure out a way to add an impact center. In any case, Dallas will need to address the issue as the Warriors severely outrebounded them through the WCF series.

Jalen Brunson will probably be a priority for the Mavs this  offseason. Brunson will enter the market as an unrestricted free agent.

Brunson developed great chemistry with the ball-dominant Doncic and was a huge factor during the postseason. In 18 postseason appearances this season, he put up 21.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.7 assist per contest.

Marc Cuban talked to Marc Stein about Brunson’s free agency and claimed the Mavericks will do everything in the power to keep the Villanova product in the roster.

“We can pay him more than anybody…I think he wants to stay, and that’s most important.”
