The San Antonio Spurs could be considered a suitor for the Cleveland Cavaliers scoring guard Collin Sexton, per Chris Fedor of the cleveland.com.
According to the Cavs’ beat writer, the scoring guard has “some fans” in the Spurs’ front office. Sexton, who will be a restricted free agent this coming offseason, could find himself on the move if he and the Cavs can’t come to an agreement on a long-term extension.
Sexton only played 11 games last season due to a season-ending meniscus surgery. Cleveland was able to compete without Sexton the 2021-22 regular season earning its first winning record since 2018.
However, the Cavs missed the 24 points the guard had averaged during the 2020-21 season. Also, other injuries in the team’s roster limited J.B. Bickerstaff’s offensive options with Jarrett Allen, Caris LeVert and Evan Mobley missing games.
The Alabama University product was the No. 8 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. His best season came in the 2020-21 campaign, as he averaged 24.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.0 steal per game while shooting 47.5 percent from the field.
The Spurs-like the Cavaliers-also made the play-in tournament in the 2021-22 season, and they could use a scoring guard like Sexton alongside all-around star Dejounte Murray who had the best season of his career in San Antonio during 2021-22.
It will be interesting to see if the Spurs will try to pry away Sexton from Cleveland as San Antonio is expected to be among the teams to have extra salary cap space to spend this offseason.
