Celtics receive shocking news on Robert Williams injury

Robert Williams has suffered a lateral meniscal tear in his left knee, the Boston Celtics announced earlier. Williams sustained the injury Sunday at the end of the third quarter of the Celtics’ win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Celtics have just seven games remaining in the regular season, meaning a potential return for Williams would not come until well into the playoffs, if at all. According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the dynamic center will miss several weeks at the minimum.

The team initially called it a left knee sprain as Williams hobbled off the court. Williams had 13 points and 10 rebounds before leaving the game. Despite his injury, Boston cruised past the Minnesota Timberwolves to add their 24th win in the last 28 games.

Boston is tied with the Miami Heat for the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. Williams has been a vital part of the Celtics resurgence since the first few months of the season.

He is averaging 10.0 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game, all career highs. The Celtics are among the best defenses in the NBA leading the league in defensive rating.

Having the ultra-athletic Williams roaming on defense and protecting the rim was a massive part of it all. Boston returns to action on Monday to face another big test ahead of the postseason with a game against the rising Toronto Raptors.
