The Cleveland Cavaliers have hired Luke Walton as an assistant coach, the franchise announced Tuesday. The former Sacramento Kings coach will work under J.B. Bickerstaff, who led the Cavs to its first winning season since 2018.

Prior to being at the helm for the Kings, Walton was the Los Angeles Lakers’ head coach from 2016 to 2019. He remained in Sacramento three seasons, but, he couldn’t put an end to the franchise’s playoff drought.

Moreover, Walton was an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors for two year (2014-15, 2015-16), reaching the NBA Finals both years and winning the NBA Championship in 2015.

He served as an interim head coach for 43 games in his two-year stint with the Warriors, replacing Steve Kerr, who faced a back issue. He led Golden State to a 39-4 start in 2015-16, including winning the first 24 games.

Walton, 42, enjoyed a 10-year NBA playing career, including his final season in 2012-13 and part of 2011-12 as a member of the Cavaliers. He finished his career appearing in 564 games with the Lakers and Cavaliers.

Walton was the No. 32 overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft by the Lakers. He was part of the back-to-back championship runs of the Lakers in 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 seasons. He spent four seasons at the University of Arizona before entering the NBA.
