Bradley Beal signed his new five-year, $251 million contract with the Washington Wizards becoming the only player with a “no trade clause” in his contract, per ESPN’s Bobby Marks. He joins a short list of elite names to have had that detail in their respective contracts.
According to Marks, that’s a list that includes LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and David Robinson, among others. With the no-trade clause, Beal can control his future if he decides to leave Washington in the future.
The Wizards cannot confirm any trade without Beal agreeing to the deal. That means he can choose his next destination in a quite player-friendly deal, which obviously was one of the Beal’s demands to remain with the team.
With that in mind, the Wizards will have to prove they can win on the highest level going forward to keep Beal for the duration of his contract. Marks added that the last season of Beal’s deal is a player’s option.
“I have been blessed to call the city of Washington my home and the Wizards organization and our fans my family for the last 10 years, growing as a player, a leader, a husband and a father along the way. Today represents such a special moment in my life,” Beal said.
The Washington superstar narrowly lost the NBA scoring title to Steph Curry in the 2020-21 season, where he averaged a career-high 31.3 points per game on a career-high .485 shooting percentage from the field, earning an All-NBA Third Team nod.
He will need to return to that level of play if the Wizards want to have any chance to be more successful next season. The Florida product’s season cut short last year due to injury, but he will be ready to compete at the start of the 2022-23 campaign.
One contract signed today that stands out is the five-year $251M one for Bradley Beal. Negotiated by Mark Bartelstein of @PrioritySports, the Beal contract consists of a no trade clause. He is the only player in the league to have a true no trade clause. — Bobby Marks (@BobbyMarks42) July 6, 2022
