Bobby Portis’ free agency will be one of the big storylines for the Milwaukee Bucks this offseason. However, it’s not expected to contain too much drama, according to NBA reporter Marc Stein.
In his recent substack, Stein revealed that “there is already tangible resignation from some interested teams” due to the fact that Portis is expected to sign a multi-year deal with the franchise this summer. (h/t hoopshype)
Portis was a key player for Milwaukee’s championship team and set several career highs last year by averaging 14.6 points, 9.1 rebounds and 1.8 made triples per game. He received starter minutes after Brook Lopez missed most of the regular season with injury.
The former Bulls and Knicks big can become a free agent this offseason if he bypasses a $4.6 million player option for 2022-23, which is something he’s expected to do. Portis was an integral part of the team during the 2020-21 championship run.
Having Portis fortifies Milwaukee’s front-court presence alongside Antetokounmpo and Brook Lopez. Wesley Matthews and Pat Connaughton have also options for next season worth $5.7M. It’s still unclear if the two wings will opt in at their current deals.
The Bucks are hoping to return healthy next season and compete for a return to the NBA Finals after their incredible run during the 2020-21 season. This past season, the road to the title was blocked by the astounding Boston Celtics in the EC semifinals.
Milwaukee was able to push the series to seven games without having Khris Middleton available due to an injury, which he suffered during the first-round series vs the Chicago Bulls.
