Blazers shut down Jusuf Nurkic for four weeks with foot injury

Portland Trail Blazers’ center Jusuf Nurkic will be out for at least four weeks due to plantar fasciitis, the team announced Wednesday.

Nurkic has played through symptoms of plantar fasciitis since September. He will be reevaluated at the end of the initial timeline.

The Bosnian center has been playing well prior to the All-Star break. He had 32 points and eight rebounds in the 123-119 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Feb.17.

At this time, the Blazers are hoping to secure the best possible place in the draft with Damian Lillard out with injury. They’re moving towards resetting their roster around Lillard by tanking for a high lottery pick.

In 56 games this season, Nurkic has averaged 15.0 points (53.5% FG, 26.8% 3-PT, 69.0% FT), 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.1 steals. Nurkic has recorded 30 double-doubles this season, which ranks eighth in the NBA.

Nurkic is set to be an unrestricted free agent this summer, and it’s unclear if the Blazers will bring him back or go in a different direction.

The Blazers are on a four-game winning streak, with Nurkic and Anfernee Simons carrying the team. The Blazers are in the verge of making the play-in tournament with a 25-34 record, which rank them 10th in the West.

Greg Brown III and Trendon Watford will likely receive more minutes with Nurkic out. The Blazers will return to action Thursday against Golden State.
