Los Angeles Lakers face a tough situation regarding their chances of even making the play-in tournament after the latest loss to Pelicans.
The Lakers dropped to 31-46 and now are a game behind 10th placed San Antonio Spurs. The “Purple and Gold” are on a five-game losing streak, having won just two of their last 10 games.
Despite that, Anthony Davis, who made his return Friday, believes the Lakers can go 5-0 in the last five games and make the play-in tournament.
He spoke out after the Pelicans loss, holding conviction that they can sweep their remaining contests.
“I think it’s a lot of belief,” said Davis on the Lakers’ chances. “We know what we’re fighting for. We know the position that we’re in. And we’re playing against top teams.”
With the San Antonio Spurs holding the tie-breaker edge, the Lakers must win two more games than their West opponents to overcome them in the standings.
Even with a perfect 5-0 record, the Lakers still need some help from other teams to knock the Spurs down. In any case, Davis and co. believe they can change the course of the season even after another disappointing stint of games.
The Lakers return to action on Sunday playing the Denver Nuggets. They will need every ounce of fight and luck to win vs Nikola Jokic and co.
Of L.A.’s remaining opponents, three of the four are playoff bound (Denver x2, Phoenix, Golden State) with the final home game (April 8) against an Oklahoma City. They are 2-8 vs those teams this season.
