76ers’ Daryl Morey talks on De’Anthony Melton trade; shares message for Danny Green

Philadelphia 76ers GM Daryl Morey addressed the media the day after the draft as the team acquired young veteran De’Anthony Melton after sending Danny Green and the 23rd pick to Memphis.

“Heading into the draft, we had a goal of strengthening our rotation,” said Morey on Friday when the trade became official. “We accomplished that by acquiring De’Anthony Melton.

He is a young, tough, and talented two-way player who can impact the game on multiple levels. We think he will thrive here, and we’re excited to add him to our roster.”

Last season with Memphis, Melton averaged career highs across the board with 10.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.4 steals in 22.7 minutes per game.

Morey went on to thank Danny Green for his contribution to the franchise as he left the team after two seasons. Green was a veteran presence in the team’s locker room. The 35-year-old might miss significant time in 2022-2023 due to injury.

“First and foremost, I want to thank Danny Green for everything he gave the Sixers organization over the last two seasons,” said Morey.

“He was a veteran leader, a consummate professional on and off the court, and made us all better. I wish him continued success in his recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the court.”

The Sixers will try to keep their main core intact this offseason. it’s unclear they would have traded Green if he wasn’t about to miss most of the 2022-23 season due to injury.
