Zalgiris Kaunas relied on its defense and claimed an impressive 68-47 home win over league leaders Real Madrid.
The Lithuanians led from start to finish and cruised to an easy home win. Thanks to their defense, they conceded just 11, eight and 10 points in three of the fourth quarters, respectively.
The “Whites” never recovered offensively and suffered a heavy road loss. Yet, this result doesn’t change the teams’ place in the standings.
Real dropped to 20-6, but is still on top. On the other hand, Zalgiris improved to 5-19, but remains on the bottom.
MVP: Edgaras Ulanovas led the way for the winners wth 15 points. Three more Zalgiris players scored in double figures.
Key to victory: The defensive performance of the Lithuanians was exceptional. They limited Real Madrid to 43.5% in two-pointers and 6.7% from beyond the arc (1/15).
Next week, Real Madrid travels to Moscow to face CSKA (Friday, March 4) and will seek a return to the winning track. The “Whites” have lost three straight EuroLeague games. For its part, Zalgiris will play ALBA in Berlin on Thursday.
