WNBA: Sabrina Ionescu leads Liberty to close-fought victory in season opener

Sabrina Ionescu had 25 points and six assists to lead New York Liberty to an 81-79 victory over the Connecticut Sun in the WNBA season opener for both teams. Natasha Howard scored 16 points, Sami Whitcomb had 15 points and five assists for New York.

Alyssa Thomas led Connecticut with 25 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Jonquel Jones had 15 points. Entering the last four minutes, Ionescu put up eight consecutive points to turn a 2-point deficit (68-70) to a 3-point lead (76-73) with 2:31 remaining.

Ionescu’s scoring barrage was enough for the Liberty to keep the lead and get away with a close-knit victory.


No.1 pick of the 2022 NBA Draft Rhyne Howard scored 16 points in her debut for Atlanta and the Dream beat the Dallas Wings 66-59 on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams.

Nia Coffey added 11 points and nine rebounds for Atlanta, and Monique Billings had six points and 14 rebounds. Atlanta never trailed and led by as many as 20 points early in the second quarter.

Dallas tried to get back in the game multiple times, but, the Dream held on for the the first win of the regular season. Mabrey led the Wings with 20 points and Gray added 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
