WNBA: Brianna Stewart seals Storm victory over Wings; Sky beats Sun in 2021 Finals rematch

Brianna Stewart scored 32 points including two late free throws with 6.7 seconds remaining to help the Seattle Storm beat the Dallas Wings 89-88 on Friday night. Stewart made 12 of 22 shots with three 3-pointers and grabbed 11 rebounds for Seattle (7-5).

Stewart leads the league in points averaging 20.2 per contest through the first 12 games of the season. Aside from Stewart, Jewell Loyd added 18 points and dished five assists to help Seattle to its first road victory of the season.

Arike Ogunbowale finished with 23 points and six assists to lead the Wings (6-6) in scoring. Dallas rookie center Awak Kuier became the first player to dunk this season, stealing the ball at half-court and finishing in the first quarter.


Diana Taurasi had 23 points and six assists and the Phoenix Mercury survived a closed-fought battle holing off the Atlanta Dream 90-88. Skylar Diggins-Smith added 18 points for Phoenix (4-8), while Diamond DeShields and Shey Peddy scored 10 apiece.

Rookie sensation Rhyne Howard scored 25 with five assists to lead Atlanta (7-6), while Cheyenne Parker finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Phoenix took a 74-60 lead with 6 minutes remaining in the game.

Atlanta fought back using five straight points by Parker to pull within 89-88 with 9.9 seconds left. Taurasi missed the second of two free throws, but Parker and AD Durr could not make the winning shot in two attempts.


Emma Meesseman had 26 points, Candace Parker added 18 points and the Chicago Sky beat the Connecticut Sun 83-79 in the rematch of the 2021 WNBA Finals. Parker made two free throws with 28.4 seconds left to give an 80-79 lead to Chicago.

The veteran start made two more with 12.4 seconds remaining for Chicago before Rebekah Gardner stole a pass under the basket and added another free throw to seal it. Gardner finished with 14 points for Chicago (8-4).

Brionna Jones scored 20 points and DeWanna Bonner added 18 for Connecticut (10-4), which saw a four-game winning streak coming to an end. Alyssa Thomas had 11 points and eight assists for the losing side.


Natasha Howard had 25 points and 10 rebounds, and the New York Liberty cruised past to a 97-83 victory over the Indiana Fever Friday night. New York (5-8) trailed 43-38 at the half, but outscored Indiana 34-20 in the third quarter to get the upper hand.

Stefanie Dolson scored all nine of her points in the third quarter, while Sabrina Ionescu tallied 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds. For the Fever (3-12), Kelsey Mitchell finished with a team-high 23 points.


Myisha Hines-Allen scored a season-high 17 points and the Washington Mystics beat the Minnesota Lynx 76-59. Elizabeth Williams added 11 points and Shakira Austin grabbed 13 rebounds for Washington (9-5).

Aerial Powers scored 12 points for Minnesota (3-10). Minnesota was without center Sylvia Fowles, who is out indefinitely due to a cartilage injury in her right knee. Elena Delle Donne of the Mystics did not play after leaving the previous game with back pain.
