WNBA: Aces beat Mercury; Lynx win first game of the season

Kelsey Plum scored 20 points as all five Las Vegas starters scored in double figures and the Aces (4-1) beat the Phoenix Mercury 86-74. Jackie Young added 19, while A’ja Wilson had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Aces.

Phoenix (2-2) led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but, the Aces made a run at the end of the second quarter and early in the third to return to the game and eventually win it. Tina Charles led Phoenix with 17 points and nine rebounds.

The Aces made nine of 15 from the field while limiting the Mercury to 3-of-11 shooting, and outscored Phoenix, 30-12, in the third quarter. The Aces also beat the Mercury 106-88 in the season opener.

For Las Vegas, that was the fourth win in the first five games of the WNBA regular season.


Kayla McBride scored 24 points in her season debut for Minnesota  to help the Lynx win their first game of the season with an 87-84 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks. Sylvia Fowles and Moriah Jefferson each added 20 points.

Fowles also had 12 rebounds and two blocks. Minnesota (1-4) began the 2021 season with four consecutive losses before finishing with 22 wins, which ranked them with the third-best record in the league last season.

Nneka Ogwumike led Los Angeles (2-3) with 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Cambage and Brown scored 12 points apiece.


Rhyne Howard scored 19 points and the Atlanta Dream beat the Indiana Fever 101-79 on Tuesday night. Erica Wheeler had a season-high 16 points and rookie Kristy Wallace added a career-best 15 for Atlanta.

Atlanta (4-1) is off to its best start since 2017 when the Dream won four of their first five games. Victoria Vivians led Indiana (2-4) with 16 points. NaLyssa Smith, the No. 2 overall selection in last month’s draft, did not play for the Fever due to an ankle injury.


Shakira Austin, the No. 3 overall pick in last month’s draft, scored 12 of her career-high 20 points, and  the Washington Mystics cruised to an 84-68 win over the Dallas Wings. Austin made 9-of-11 from the field, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots.

Elena Delle Donne added 14 points for Washington (4-1). The Wings, who took an early 19-6 lead, in the game saw Marina Mabrey and Isabelle Harrison each scoring 16 points.


DeWanna Bonner scored 12 of her 16 points in the decisive first half and the Sun beat the New York Liberty 92-65. Bonner made her season debut for Connecticut. Natasha Heideman put up a season-high 15 points for the winning side.

The Sun (2-1) saw also the rest of the team providing to the blowout with Brionna Jones scoring 14, Jonquel Jones adding 13 and Alyssa Thomas 12. Betnijah Laney led New York (1-4) with 16 points and Stefanie Dolson scored 13.
