WNBA: A’ja Wilson leads Aces past Sun in the battle of the best records in the league

A’ja Wilson had 24 points and 14 rebounds, and the Las Vegas Aces beat the Connecticut Sun 89-81 on Tuesday night. Jackie Young scored 21 points as the top-seeded team in the West defeated the top-seeded team in the East.

The Aces(9-1) won its seventh straight game and registered the best 10-game stint in the franchise history. The Aces led 50-42 at the halftime and kept a comfortable lead (76-63) until the Sun went on a 14-2 run to get within 87-79 with a minute to play.

The Aces kept their composure as Kelsey Plum finished with 18 points and seven assists. DeWanna Bonner scored 14 points and Thomas had 12 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for Connecticut (6-3).


Ariel Atkins scored a season-high 28 points and the Washington Mystics beat the Indiana Fever 87-75. Elena Delle Donne added 19 points with 13 of them coming in the first half of the game.

Elizabeth Williams led Washington in hustle stats with 15 rebounds and six blocks, while also scoring 10 points for her first double-double with the Mystics. Washington (7-3) trailed 46-38 at halftime before outscoring Indiana 49-29 in the second half.

Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana (3-8) with 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting. NaLyssa Smith added 13 points as Indiana shot the ball on just 40 percent clip in 70 field-goal attempts.


Courtney Vandersloot scored 18 points and the Chicago Sky slipped past the short-handed Phoenix Mercury 73-70. Kahleah Copper added 11 points, and Emma Meesseman and Gardner each scored 10 for Chicago (5-3).

Vandersloot made one of two free throws with nine seconds left in the fourth quarter for a 72-70 lead, and she knocked the ball away from Skylar Diggins-Smith on a drive at the other end to clinch the win.

Rebekah Gardner also went one for two at the line for a three-point lead and Mercury’s Diamond DeShields did not hit the rim on a corner three-pointer in the last shot of the game. Tina Charles scored 25 points for Phoenix (2-7).


Brittney Sykes scored 25 points, and the Los Angeles Sparks defeated the Dallas Wings 91-93 Tuesday night. Nneka Ogwumike finished with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Sparks started the game with a 15-28 lead in the first quarter.

Dallas took an 80-83 lead with 4:30 remaining but the Sparks outscored their opponents 13-8 in the closing minutes to get the win. Liz Cambage added 19 points and eight rebounds for Los Angeles (5-6).

Isabelle Harrison was the leading scorer for Dallas (5-4) with 20 points and eight rebounds. Marina Mabrey and Arike Ogunbowale had 16 points each for the losing side as the Wings lost the second game in the row.
